DESCRIPTION
Much larger than most that I have come across through the years. This one was hanging on Dr. Hubbell's wall.
The Snaggletooth Shark, Hemipristis elongata, is a fascinating and somewhat uncommon species of shark found in warm coastal waters across the Indo-Pacific region. Its range extends from the eastern coast of Africa and the Red Sea to Southeast Asia, northern Australia, and parts of the Indian Ocean. These sharks prefer shallow waters, often near coral reefs and continental shelves, making them opportunistic predators in their environment.
Distinctive Features & Biology
The Snaggletooth Shark gets its name from its highly serrated teeth, which differ between the upper and lower jaws—giving it a striking, prehistoric appearance. These teeth are adapted for grasping and cutting prey, making them highly efficient hunters. They primarily feed on fish, squid, and crustaceans.
Adult Snaggletooth Sharks can reach lengths of around 8.5 feet (2.6 meters), with females typically growing larger than males. Despite their fearsome dentition, they are not considered dangerous to humans and are not known for aggressive behavior.
