The whitenose shark (Nasolamia velox) is a lesser-known species of requiem shark found in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It primarily inhabits coastal waters from southern Mexico to Peru, including the waters around the Galápagos Islands. This species tends to favor shallow, tropical waters, often near reefs or continental shelves.
Biology & Size
Whitenose sharks are relatively small compared to other requiem sharks, with an average length of around 3 to 4 feet (90-120 cm), though some individuals may grow slightly larger. They are named for the distinctive pale or white patch on their snout, which sets them apart from similar species. Like other requiem sharks, they have a streamlined body built for speed and agility, making them effective predators of small fish and cephalopods.
