DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
This is a Spiny Dogfish (Squalus acanthias) from Ventura, California. It was once part of Dr. Gordon Hubbell’s famous shark collection. The spiny dogfish may not be a giant like a Great White, but it’s an important little shark that scientists have studied for a very long time.

The Spiny Dogfish is easy to spot because it has sharp spines in front of its two dorsal fins—like built-in defense spikes. Even though it’s small, it can live over 40 years, which is a long time for a shark. Off the coast of California, these sharks swim in schools and feed on fish, squid, and crabs. They’ve taught scientists a lot about how sharks grow, age, and survive in the ocean.
