Slender Smoothhound Jaw with Data (Gollum attenuatus)
The genus name alone makes this one of the most talked-about sharks in any collection — named by Leonard Compagno in 1973 after the character in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, to whom this shark "bears some resemblance in form and habits." Gaunt, elongated, lurking in the deep around New Zealand's seamounts — the comparison writes itself. From Dr. Gordon Hubbell's collection comes a jaw that carries both one of the most memorable names in shark taxonomy and the kind of biological backstory that keeps people at the display case.
Species & Classification
- Scientific Name: Gollum attenuatus (Garrick, 1954)
- Common Names: Slender Smoothhound, Gollumshark, Slender Smooth-hound
- Family: Pseudotriakidae (False Catsharks)
- Order: Carcharhiniformes
- Etymology: Gollum is named for the antihero of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, to which G. attenuatus "bears some resemblance in form and habits"; attenuatus is Latin for "drawn out or tapered," referring to its attenuate, almost eel-like, emaciated shape FishBase
Biology & Physical Characteristics
- Extremely slim, plain brownish shark reaching 1.1 m in length; broad, highly flattened head with a long, distinctive bell-shaped snout when viewed from above Wikipedia
- Mouth angular with short furrows at the corners; contains a very high number of tooth rows in both jaws Wikipedia
- Usually brown or brownish grey; has a rudimentary nictitating membrane and approximately 100 rows of small teeth in both upper and lower jaw Sharkwater
- Depth range 120–660 m, usually 400–600 m; bathydemersal FishBase
- Maximum recorded length 107 cm Shark-References
- Elongate oval-shaped eyes with a prominent ridge below each; lives near the bottom on seamounts and seamount chains Fishes of Australia
Habitat & Distribution
- Endemic to the waters around New Zealand, where it is found close to the bottom over the continental slope at depths of 300–600 m Wikipedia
- Southwest Pacific: occurs off New Zealand and on rises between New Zealand and the east coast of Australia, New Caledonia, and Fiji FishBase
- Range restricted to the upper and middle continental slope around New Zealand, including submarine features such as the Three Kings Ridge, the Challenger Plateau, and the Wanganella Bank Wikipedia
- Prefers a temperature of around 10°C and a salinity of approximately 34.8‰; inhabits both soft and rocky-bottomed habitats in terrain ranging from plateaus to steep slopes Wikipedia
Diet & Behavior
- Diet is diverse but dominated by small, benthic bony fishes and decapod crustaceans Wikipedia
- Slender form allows access to tight benthic spaces; generally swims near the sea floor Wikipedia
- Most abundant at 500–599 m depth; catch rates decrease markedly with increased distance of hooks from the bottom, confirming a strongly demersal lifestyle JST
Reproduction
- Exhibits aplacental viviparity with oophagy; embryos feed on yolk and ova, and also consume uterine milk; usually 2 young per litter; exhibits distinct pairing with embrace Shark-References
- The right ovary produces 50–100 ova enclosed in a single egg capsule per uterus; only one embryo develops, consuming the remaining ova which are passed to an external yolk sac providing nutrition for development Springer — a highly specialized and unusual reproductive strategy
- Size at maturity for both sexes approximately 700 mm; sex ratio of embryos is 1:1 Springer
Conservation Status
- Listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Sharkwater
- Of no commercial fisheries interest FishBase; taken occasionally as bycatch in deepwater longline fisheries operating around New Zealand seamounts
- Endemic range limited to New Zealand waters makes any population disruption locally significant
Misc. & Collector Facts
- Gollum attenuatus is one of only a handful of sharks in the world named after a fictional character — and the only one named after a Tolkien creation, giving this jaw immediate name recognition with collectors far beyond the elasmobranch world
- A 2006 phylogenetic study confirmed that Gollum and Pseudotriakis (the False Catshark) share a high degree of genetic similarity and form a natural clade apart from all other ground sharks Wikipedia — placing this jaw in a taxonomically fascinating family with only a handful of species worldwide
- The unusual reproductive strategy — a single embryo consuming dozens of sibling ova in a sealed capsule — is among the most specialized birth strategies of any shark
- "With data" includes collection locality and specimen documentation — essential for a New Zealand endemic where seamount-specific records are scientifically valuable
- Dr. Gordon Hubbell provenance adds significant authentication and collectibility value
- Ideal for: New Zealand shark collectors, Pseudotriakidae specialists, literary and pop culture–adjacent natural history enthusiasts, deepwater Southwest Pacific specimen collections, museum-quality displays
