The Pigeye Shark, also known as the Java Shark (Carcharhinus amboinensis), is a species of requiem shark found in tropical and subtropical waters. This species is notable for its stocky build and large, rounded eyes, which give it its common name. Pigeye Sharks typically grow to about 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) in length, displaying a grayish-brown color on their back and sides, fading to a white underside.

Key Characteristics of the Pigeye Shark:

  1. Size and Build: It has a robust and stocky body, with adult sharks usually reaching up to 2.5 meters in length.

  2. Eyes: The shark's notably large, pig-like eyes are adapted to its low-light, deep-water habitats.

  3. Habitat: Pigeye Sharks are often found in coastal waters, estuaries, and sometimes venture into freshwater. They are commonly associated with muddy or turbid water conditions.

  4. Diet: As an opportunistic feeder, its diet consists mainly of fish, but it also preys on crustaceans and cephalopods.

  5. Behavior: This species is known to be relatively aggressive and is considered potentially dangerous to humans, though encounters are rare due to its deep-water habits.

  6. Reproduction: The Pigeye Shark is viviparous, with females giving birth to live young after a gestation period.
