This jaw comes from the personal collection of Dr. Gordon Hubbell, the legendary shark expert who first taught me how to prepare jaws back in the early 1990s. I'm fortunate to have acquired part of his collection, the pieces not going to the University of Florida. Most of what's on this site was either on display or carefully stored in Gordon's collection for decades, and this jaw is one of those pieces.
The shark itself has a great story. Caught by a commercial fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida in January 1994, this big male had gotten tangled in a longline after trying to eat a shark that was already hooked on it. Because of how it was caught, state marine biologists were called in to study it before it went to market, so this specimen actually has real scientific documentation to back it up, not just a fish tale.

About the Great White Shark

Appearance: The great white shark has a classic torpedo-shaped body built for speed and power. It is easily recognized by its distinct coloration—a slate-gray to brown upper body that sharply contrasts with a white underside. This countershading provides camouflage in the water, allowing it to ambush prey from below. They possess a conical snout, black eyes, and a powerful, crescent-shaped tail.

Size: As the world's largest predatory fish, female great whites average 15-16 feet, while males are slightly smaller at 11-13 feet. Exceptional individuals have been known to exceed 20 feet in length and weigh over 4,000 pounds.

Diet: A great white's diet evolves with its age. Younger sharks prey on fish, rays, and smaller sharks. As they mature, their diet shifts to larger marine mammals, with a preference for high-energy prey like seals and sea lions. They are also known to scavenge on whale carcasses. Their hunting strategy often involves a swift and powerful ambush from beneath their unsuspecting prey.

Distribution: This highly migratory species is found in cool, coastal waters across the globe. Major populations are concentrated in areas off the coasts of the United States (California and the Northeast), South Africa, Australia, Japan, and Chile. They are capable of traversing entire ocean basins.

Reproduction: Great white sharks are ovoviviparous, meaning the female carries the eggs internally until they hatch, at which point she gives birth to live pups. The gestation period is estimated to be between 12 and 18 months, resulting in a litter of 2 to 10 fully independent pups that are about four feet long at birth.
