DESCRIPTION
This listing features a genuine False Catshark jaw, a fascinating and rare specimen from the depths of the ocean. A unique addition to any shark enthusiast’s collection. Acquired from an old collection. Oddly enough, on this particular jaw, I sold it to the collector 20+ years ago. It's come full circle.
False Catshark (Pseudotriakis microdon) – A Deep-Sea Enigma
The False Catshark (Pseudotriakis microdon) is a rare and elusive deep-sea shark, recognized by its soft, flabby body and cat-like eyes. This species inhabits the deep waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, typically found between 500 to 1,400 meters (1,640 to 4,600 feet) deep. Despite its wide distribution, encounters with this shark are uncommon due to its deep-sea habitat.
Growing up to 10 feet (3 meters) in length, the False Catshark has a distinctive elongated body, broad pectoral fins, and a large mouth with small, numerous teeth suited for scavenging and preying on deep-sea fish and squid. Unlike most sharks, its body lacks firm musculature, giving it a sluggish, eel-like swimming style.
Because of its deep-water lifestyle, very little is known about its behavior and reproduction, though it is believed to be ovoviviparous, giving birth to live young. While not considered commercially important, False Catsharks occasionally appear as bycatch in deep-sea fishing operations.
