The Borneo broadfin shark (Lamiopsis tephrodes) is a species of requiem shark belonging to the family Carcharhinidae. This species was historically confused with the broadfin shark (Lamiopsis temminckii), but a taxonomic revision in 2010 resurrected L. tephrodes as a distinct species based on morphological differences. Distribution and Habitat
Lamiopsis tephrodes is native to the western central Pacific, particularly around Borneo. It inhabits coastal, inshore waters, typically within the continental shelf. Biology and Size
The Borneo broadfin shark is characterized by its broad pectoral fins. While specific details about its biology are limited, it is likely viviparous, similar to other requiem sharks, meaning it gives birth to live young. The size at maturity and maximum length are not well-documented, but related species like the broadfin shark (Lamiopsis temminckii) can reach lengths up to 160 cm.
Taxonomic Clarification
The name Lamiopsis tephrodes was resurrected in 2010 after being synonymized with Lamiopsis temminckii. A detailed study by White and Naylor examined morphological features that distinguished L. tephrodes from L. temminckii, leading to the recognition of L. tephrodes as a separate species.
