The Bonnethead Shark (Sphyrna tiburo) is a small member of the hammerhead shark family, Sphyrnidae. Recognizable by its distinctively shovel-shaped head, called a cephalofoil, the Bonnethead is the smallest of the hammerhead species.

Key Characteristics of the Bonnethead Shark:

1. Size and Appearance: Adult Bonnethead Sharks typically measure about 0.9 to 1.5 meters (3 to 5 feet) in length. They have a smooth, streamlined body with a gray-brown color on the top and lighter undersides.

2. Cephalofoil: The Bonnethead's head is broadly rounded and much less hammer-like compared to other hammerhead species, resembling a bonnet.

3. Habitat: This shark prefers warm, shallow waters and is commonly found in coastal areas like bays, estuaries, and coral reefs, primarily in the Western Hemisphere.

4. Diet: Bonnetheads have a varied diet that includes crustaceans, small fish, and cephalopods. Interestingly, they are one of the few sharks known to consume seagrass as part of their diet.

5. Behavior: They are social sharks, often seen in small groups. Bonnetheads are known for their bottom-feeding habits and are less aggressive than larger hammerhead species.
