This jaw comes from the collection of Dr. Gordon Hubbell. Massive jaw that was expertly prepared by him. This jaw was displayed on the wall in his museum. The teeth are in nearly perfect condition. One small are on the right side Inge was repaired. The cartilage there is very thin and often tears. The largest lower tooth measures 1.92" wide.
The bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus) is one of the ocean’s most ancient lineages, a deep water predator that can reach over 15 feet in length. Unlike most sharks that have five gill slits, the sixgill has (as its name suggests)six, a primitive trait that connects it to early shark ancestors. Living in deep offshore waters, it rises toward the surface at night to hunt fish, rays, and even other sharks.
Its jaw is especially striking: the lower teeth form a dramatic, saw-like comb designed for slicing, while the upper teeth are more slender and pointed for gripping prey.
